<p> DIED. Lillian Gish, 99, silent movie star; in New York City.
Before cinema had sound, it had something every bit as
expressive: the face of Lillian Gish, who debuted on stage at
five and went on to become the pre-eminent actress of pretalkie
Hollywood, best remembered for her work in such D.W. Griffith
classics as Intolerance and Way Down East. Gish also triumphed
in theater and talking motion pictures as recently as the 1980s
(Sweet Liberty and The Whales of August).
