  16. Before cinema had sound, it had something every bit as
  17. expressive: the face of Lillian Gish, who debuted on stage at
  18. five and went on to become the pre-eminent actress of pretalkie
  19. Hollywood, best remembered for her work in such D.W. Griffith
  20. classics as Intolerance and Way Down East. Gish also triumphed
  21. in theater and talking motion pictures as recently as the 1980s
  22. (Sweet Liberty and The Whales of August).
